ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team mounted a rally in the second half after it was down by double figures in its game vs. Presbyterian on Saturday. Asheville got the PC lead down to five with 2:33 to go in the contest, but the Blue Hose put together a late run to eventually win Saturday's contest, 69-54. The loss moves Asheville's record to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in Big South play.
Kai Carter posted her third 20-plus point performance in the last four games to lead the Bulldogs Saturday. Carter finished with 20 points on a 9-for-21 day from the field that included a pair of made 3-pointers. Nadiria Evans chipped in 13 points in her return to the lineup, while Jordaynia Ivie led the Bulldogs on the glass with six rebounds. Sophomore Jamia Blake, meanwhile, was Asheville's primary facilitator setting a new career-high with five assists.
"I was a little disappointed in the way we rebounded today," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "Even though we didn't shoot the ball well, if we kept them offensive glass, that could have led to some transition opportunities. I'm proud of our fight. It's hard when you're not making shots, and it can sometimes be deflating. I challenged our players to remember that we have to play through those things and that we can rebound and play defense no matter what. We did that for part of the game but not the entire 40 minutes."
The first 20 minutes of Saturday's matchup were tightly contested. Each team at one point put together a 7-0 run to spark a brief surge of momentum. Presbyterian was the team, however, that held the lead at the intermission thanks to a slightly more efficient first two quarters (40.7 percent to 26.7 percent), 27-23.
Asheville and Presbyterian continued to trade momentum swings in the second half. Ivie sank a 3-pointer to give Asheville a one-point lead, 37-36, with 6:01 to go in the third quarter. However, the Blue Hose used the next four minutes to erase the Bulldog lead and build a sizable lead for themselves. PC saw its lead grow to double figures (11 points) with 2:20 to go in the third. The Bulldogs did get the deficit back down to single digits heading the fourth, 51-43.
The Bulldogs kept battling and eventually closed the PC lead down to five after a made layup from Amanda Blake made the score 59-54 with 2:33 to go. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Presbyterian had one more good run in it as it closed the game on a 10-0 run to finish off the 69-54 win.
Asheville will return to action on Tuesday when it welcomes Big South newcomer North Carolina A&T to Kimmel Arena. Tuesday's game, which is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off, will be the women's basketball program's 'We Back Pat' game. The Bulldog coaches will make donations to the Pat Summitt Foundation, which helps create awareness and raises money in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the foundation. Fans are encouraged to wear purple for the game and cheer on your Bulldogs as they support a worthy cause.
