Women’s Basketball welcomes Longwood to Kimmel Arena on Saturday

01.07.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After its original matchup vs. Hampton was postponed, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team will now host Longwood on Saturday at Kimmel Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., and the game can be watched on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville battled back from a 17-point deficit to nearly knock off Longwood on the road on Wednesday. However, the Lancers knocked down some clutch free throws down the stretch to finish off the 62-57 win over the Bulldogs. With the loss, Asheville's overall record stands at 6-8 and dips to 1-2 in Big South play.

Schedule Switches –
As mentioned previously, the Bulldogs were initially set to take on Hampton on Saturday. However, that contest was postponed due to CoVID-19 concerns within the Pirate program, and a rescheduled date has not been announced. With this change, UNC Asheville will instead host Longwood on Saturday in a game moved from Feb. 8. The Lancers were available to play after its scheduled home game Saturday vs. Winthrop was also postponed.

Nadiria nears more milestones –
Fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans has accomplished quite a bit during her time in Asheville, and she is approaching a few other milestones. Evans needs just 53 more rebounds to join the 500-rebound club. She'd be the 20th Bulldog to reach this mark and the third Bulldog to score 1,500 points to go with 500 rebounds joining Shelia Ford and Vicki Giffin. Furthermore, with 33 made free throws, Evans will be the program record holder in that category, surpassing Giffin's 448 makes from the line.

A spark from season-high performances –
The rally that the Bulldogs put together on Wednesday was due in part to the performances of Faith Adams and Abigail Wilson. Wilson set new season-highs with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Adams went 4-for-6 from 3-point range and finished with a season-high point total of 12.

About Longwood –
Longwood enters Saturday's matchup as the lone Big South team that has three league victories to its credit this season. A significant reason for the Lancers' success has been the play of the tandem of Kyla McMakin (17.1 PPG) and Akila Smith (16.3 PPG), as both players rank among the top-five scorers in the conference.

Series Rewind vs. Longwood –
Even with Wednesday's victory over the Bulldogs, Longwood still trails in the all-time series, 15-9. Since Longwood has joined the Big South, Asheville has been especially tough on the Lancers at Kimmel Arena, winning seven of the nine matchups.

How to Follow -
As mentioned earlier, Thursday's game will air on ESPN+Live stats will also be available for following, or fans can tune to Rewind 100.3 to hear the radio call from Mike Gore.
