ESPNU to broadcast UNC Asheville-Winthrop Men’s Basketball game January 13

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday that the UNC Asheville-Winthrop men's basketball contest will be broadcast on ESPNU as its first Big South Wildcard broadcast of the 2021-22 season. The game will move from its current Wednesday, Jan. 12 date to Thursday, Jan. 13 and will tip at 7:00pm inside the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
The match-up will mark the sixth meeting between the squads on ESPNU, with Winthrop holding a 3-2 advantage in the nationally-televised meetings. It will be Winthrop's 14th appearance in the Big South's ESPNU Wildcard series, and 11th for Asheville. The Bulldogs handed the Eagles their lone conference loss during the 2020-21 season.
UNC Asheville is tied for the most wins in the league this season with eight, currently ranking first in the Big South with 10.1 three-pointers per game, first in three-point defense at 25.8 percent allowed, and third in scoring offense at 76.7 points per game.
Winthrop closed the non-conference season with a 7-6 mark, currently ranking first in the league in field goal percentage (47.3), while ranking second in three-point percentage (37.7), scoring offense (77.7) and three-pointers per game (9.5).
This is the ninth year of the Big South's ESPNU Wildcard series, which again features six Thursday broadcasts –- Jan. 13 (UNC Asheville at Winthrop), Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 -- that are selected 14 days in advance. A total of 35 games have been played in the series that began in 2013-14, and while the home teams are 24-11, the 35 games have been decided by an average of 8.37 points, with 22 of those being decided by single-digits.
