Men’s soccer drops contest at Georgia State

09.07.2021 | Men's Soccer

ATLANTA, Ga.  – The UNC Asheville Men's Soccer team traveled to Georgia State on Tuesday night, falling to the Panthers 4-0.

Although Georgia State outshot Asheville (12-4), the teams went into the break scoreless, much due to the play of Leon Musial who had a pair of great saves. The Panthers would break through in the 64th, and that was all they needed, adding three more. Asheville now drops to 1-3 on the season, while Georgia State improves to 3-1.

The Game at a Glance

  • Panthers strike four times in second half
  • Georgia State totals 21 saves, seven on frame
  • Izzy Garcia, Jarron James register shots on goal

How it Happened
Georgia State registered the first shot and a corner before the Bulldogs responded with a corner in ninth. The Panthers continued to press, pushing three shots off target. In the 31st, Izzy Garcia broke through and pushed a shot wide. With just under seven minutes to play Georgia State played a ball up the wing and into the box but Musial was able to lay out and snag the ball. On the ensuing Bulldog possession, James ripped a shot that was deflected for a corner. In the 42nd, Musial made a leaping save to his left and tipped the ball over the post to keep the game scoreless as the teams went into half.

In the second, Conor Behan pushed a shot wide just minutes into the second with Brian Wome firing a shot just wide in the 60th. In the 64th, a bevy of shots eventually got behind the Bulldogs defense and put the Panthers ahead 1-0. Georgia State capitalized on the momentum, scoring just two minutes later to double up. The Panthers would add a third minutes later after a diving Musial save was put in by Max Wilkins. A questionable penalty call would lead to a third goal Justin Guest as Georgia State went ahead 4-0.
