09.05.2021 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Women's Soccer team faced Indiana State on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field, as the Bulldogs battled the Sycamores to a 1-1 draw.
Despite being outshot 9-3 at the break, neither team would find the back of the net until the 64th minute when Kaiya Boyd took a feed from Barrett Eidson for her first collegiate score. Indiana State would respond just minutes later when Sasha Thompson equalized. The teams each registered three shots in the first overtime, and the Sycamores had a pair in the second, but the game ultimately ended tied at 1-1. Bronwyn Luitwieler had a huge game in net, matching her career best of 12 saves to help Asheville hold onto the result.
"After the loss on Thursday, the talk all weekend was that we need to start way better today, and I think that was the difference," said UNC Asheville head coach Andy McNab. The attitude was fantastic from the players on the field to the sideline. This isn't a win, but to get this result and show that we are pushing forward in the right direction against a quality team. The mood is great right now so hopefully we can take that into Thursday."

How it Happened
Indiana State earned a corner right out of the gate, peppering the net with seven shots through the first 30 minutes before Madison Carter and Ava Nkadi each pushed shots wide for the Bulldogs. Indiana State's Carlie Jensen had a chance in the 43rd but Luitwieler was there to turn it away as the teams went into the break 0-0.
The Sycamores had a couple of quick chances in the second before Gillian Oyos worked her way in for a shot that went wide. In the 64th, the Bulldogs would win the ball as Alice Walker began the counter attack, finding Barrett Eidson on the right side who cut in and played the ball to Boyd as the sophomore from Cranston, Rhode Island, finished with her right foot to put Asheville in front 1-0.
"That was really good and it's what we've been working on a lot," McNab said of the buildup to the goal. "Barrett picked up the ball and slid the ball through and what a composed finish from Kaiya for her first collegiate goal."
