ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team is set to open up its fall season on Monday, competing in the Pirate Collegiate Classic in Greenville, North Carolina. East Carolina will serve as the tournament host, with the action wrapping up on Tuesday at the Greenville Country Club.
"We are excited to kick off the season here in Greenville at the Pirate Classic," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "It feels like it's been forever since we've teed it up in a tournament and you can see these young women are itching to compete again."
The Bulldogs will be a bit more seasoned this year, as the spring 2021 squad was comprised of almost all freshman. The team features seven sophomores including Venecia Zaia who placed second in the Future Golf Champions Collegiate Series Tournament in California back in July. Zaia, who posted a T-3 finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in March, finished with a 1-under-par 212 at the Future Golf Champions Tournament.
Madyson Gold finished her freshman campaign strong, tying for sixth at the Low Country Intercollegiate and 14th at the Big South Conference Championship. Fellow sophomore Phoebe Carles started off her career strong back in February, finishing T-9 in her collegiate debut at the Lady Bison Point Bay Classic.
"There are some really great birdie and eagle opportunities on the par 5's here even so with the short par 4's," Schneider said. "Knowing that leading up to this event we've put in a good amount of work on our short wedges the last two weeks so I'm excited to see how that translates into the tournament."
