Bulldogs have strong round at Pirate Collegiate Classic

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team capped off its Fall 2021 season-opening tournament on Tuesday, completing play in the ECU Pirate Collegiate Classic.

The Bulldogs, who opened up with scores of 313 and 312 on Monday, posted a strong score of 297 on Tuesday's last 18 holes. With the strong finish, Asheville was able to jump from eighth to a tie for sixth place overall.

"This was the best start to a season we've had since I've been the coach here at UNC Asheville," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "We made more birdies, got up and down and hit much better wedge shots inside 100 yards than I've seen thus far. I am incredibly proud of this team and the hard work they've been putting in leading up to this tournament! This is just the beginning and if we can continue with the focus and commitment to excellence that I've seen recently, there is no telling what they could accomplish this season."

Phoebe Carles, who posted scores of 79 and 73 on Monday, shot an even par 72 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 10th place overall. Carles performed particularly well on the first nine holes, birdieing No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 to shoot 3-under par on the front and finish with an 8-over-par 224 for the tournament.

Teammate Venecia Zaia finished just two strokes behind Carles overall, firing her lowest round of the tournament (2-over-par 74) to claim 14th individually. After bogeying hole No. 14, Zaia responded with a solid birdie on No. 16.

Amber Capote finished the tournament T-20, scoring birdies on No. 5 and No. 13 while Hailey Pendleton rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

"Phoebe with a top 10, Venecia with a top 15 and 3 extremely solid rounds from Amber make me really excited for them and the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of this semester," said Schneider. "They are well on their way with this start to making a dent in them and eventually surpassing them and having to set higher loftier goals. Can't wait to get back to work at practice this week and keep the momentum going!"
