Baseball Hosts USC Upstate on Tuesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes USC Upstate to Greenwood Field for a midweek Big South matchup. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Spartans is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped the series finale of its three-game set vs. Longwood on Saturday by a score of 5-3. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs did win two of the three games vs. the Lancers. Asheville has won all five series it has played on its home field in 2021.
Edwards Named Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week – Junior pitcher Jacob Edwards was named the Big South's Starting Pitcher of the Week earlier today by the league office. Edwards, who allowed one run (not earned) on one hit with 10 strikeouts in a win over Longwood on Friday, earned the same honor back on April 12. Edwards is the first Asheville pitcher to earn two weekly awards from the Big South since Alan DeRatt in 2008.
Chasing History – Senior Brandon Lankford launched his 16th home run of the season Saturday vs. Longwood. The long ball was also Lankford's 51st of his Asheville career. The Mocksville, N.C. native needs three more to break the conference's home run record of 53 by Winthrop's Jason Colson and tie Asheville's single-season record of 19 set by Brian Shehan in 1989.
Big Seasons vs. Big South pitching – During this 2021 season, where most Asheville's games have been played against Big South teams, two hitters have been a problem for opposing pitchers to get out. Lankford (48) and Dominic Freeberger (46) rank first and second in hits in Big South games in 2021. The total of 96 hits between these two Bulldogs is the most of any Big South duo.
About USC Upstate – USC Upstate is arguably playing the best out of any team in the conference heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Upstate, which has won its last 10 league games, will come to Asheville with an overall record of 33-10 and a 24-9 in the Big South. A player to watch for the Spartans is Cameron MacIntosh, who has been named the Big South's Player of the Week the last three weeks. In last week's series vs. High Point, MacIntosh hit .667 in 15-bats with four RBI and seven runs scored.
Last Time vs. Upstate – Tuesday's game will mark the second time this season that the Spartans and Bulldogs have matched up against each other. The first meeting occurred back on March 17, and Upstate came away with the 4-1 victory.
Attendance Policy – Face coverings are required, and social distancing protocols will be in place that will limit seating capacity to Asheville fans that are on the pass list. Attendees will be allowed to bring tailgate chairs, and game operations staff will direct fans to sit in a socially distant manner. No visiting fans will be admitted.
