Bulldogs Drop Close One to USC Upstate, 7-6
05.11.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team had the tying run on third base in the ninth inning but came up just short, falling to USC Upstate by a score of 7-6 Tuesday night at Greenwood Field.
Asheville was led Tuesday by the trio of Dominic Freeberger, Ty Kaufman, Grayson Preslar. Each Bulldog finished the contest with two hits each. PJ Heintz reached three times after being hit by a pitch twice and notching a single.
Tuesday's contest was a tightly contested one as no lead was larger than three runs in the contest. Upstate struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning. However, Asheville would battle back to eventually tie the game at 4-4 thanks to an RBI single by Brandon Lankford in the sixth.
Upstate was able to regain its lead thanks to some fielding miscues by Asheville that led to three unearned runs. Trailing 7-4 in the ninth, the Bulldogs made it interesting. MJ Lucas drew a walk, and Heintz followed with a single. Sebastian Dunn drove both in with a triple with two outs to put the tying run at third with two outs. Upstate closer Kevin Davis was able to induce a flyout to get out of the jam and preserve the victory for the Spartans.
Asheville will be back in action this weekend as it visits Gardner-Webb for a three-game series. The three games vs. the Runnin' Bulldogs will mark the final road series of the regular season for Asheville. That series is scheduled to get underway with a single game Friday evening beginning at 5 p.m.
