Women's golf finishes season at Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team capped off its spring 2021 season at the Big South Championship at the Patriot at Grand Harbor on Friday, finishing in seventh place as a team while Madyson Gold finished T-14.
"It was great to finally play in a conference championship again after almost a year hiatus from golf," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Ericka Schneider. "We had some fantastic rounds come out of this tournament. Baylee today with the low round of 73 and a great overall finish for Venecia T-16 and Mady T-14."
As a team, Asheville shot 314, 305 on the first two days, finishing with a 310 to finish in seventh place with a 929 combined. The Tournament, which is held at The Patriot at Grand Harbor, is led by Campbell (+6), and will shift to match play for the top four teams Saturday (USC Upstate, Gardner-Webb, High Point).
After opening up with two straight 3-over-par 75's, Madyson Gold saved her best round for last, posting a 2-over-par 72 to finish 8-over-par for the tournament. Gold birdied hole No. 1 before closing out the back nine with circles on holes No. 16 and No. 18.
Venecia Zaia finished just one stroke back of Gold, finishing with a 79 on Friday to total a 9-over-par 225 and sit T-16. The Murrieta, California native shot a 3-over-par 75 on Wednesday, before carding her lowest collegiate round on Thursday, shooting a 1-under-par 71 with birdies on holes No. 6, No. 9 and No. 16.
Baylee Evans, meanwhile, struggled a bit in the first two rounds but had a huge round three, shooting the best 18 of the day for the Bulldogs with a 1-over-par 73 with birdies on No. 13 and No. 17 (T-34). Amber Capote rounded out the scoring for Asheville, totaling 240 after three rounds of play.

"This team is so much fun to coach and I can't wait to see what the next few seasons bring," said Schneder of her young squad. "We have a lot of talent that is just starting to get to be developed and if the spurts of brilliance this season can be brought together into consistent performances, this is going to be a team to watch out for the next few years."
