SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After battling for nearly 110 minutes, Gillian Oyos scored her first goal of the season to lift the UNC Asheville women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over USC Upstate in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.
"The credit for the win goes to the perseverance of the team as a whole," said head coach Clifton Bush. "Every player contributed exactly what we needed to get the three points. We honestly felt that multiple goals were coming. The only question was if we would have the offensive and defensive discipline to keep working and playing to our model."
Upstate struck first in the 33rd minute, but Courtney McCluskey answered in the 44th with Oyos ultimately ending the game in the 109th. Asheville snags its first win of the season, improving to 1-5 overall while USC Upstate falls to 0-4-1 overall. The Bulldogs threatened all afternoon, totaling 23 shots with 10 shots on goal. In net, Bronwyn Luitweiler totaled two saves while the Spartans totaled eight shots.

How it Happened
Asheville registered the first chance when Gillian Oyos fired a shot that was picked up by Cora Brendie. The Bulldogs continued to press, with Skyler Chillson, Madison Carter and Kaiya Boyd all getting chances in the first 10 minutes. In the 15th, Oyos had a shot that was blocked and Asheville earned a corner but couldn't convert. In the 23rd, Upstate registered its first chance but pushed the shot wide, breaking the stalemate in the 33rd when Jane Bossler made the score 1-0. The Bulldogs continued to press and would answer just before half when Maya Gutman found Courtney McCluskey for the score in the 44th.
Oyos opened the second with a chance right out of the gates and Asheville earned a corner in the 49th. Ava Nkadi and McCluskey threatened before the Spartans fired a shot on frame in the 60th that was collected by Luitweiler. Down the stretch, Asheville created chances including a barrage of shots in the last five minutes, but the two teams ended 90 minutes tied at 1-1.
In the first overtime, the teams struggled to create opportunities until the 98th when Lindie Clark fired one on frame that was saved. The Bulldogs earned a corner kick in the 105th but it was cleared away. In the 109th, Upstate registered a scoring chance but Luitweiler snagged it and on the ensuing counter attack Oyos ripped a low liner into the back of the net to give Asheville the 2-1 victory.
"A number of players executed a very high level of physical and tactical quality," Bush said. "Ava (Nkadi) was a catalyst for us. She never stopped being threatening even after competing in a track meet yesterday. Lindie (Clark) and Kate (Sollom) committed to imposing their abilities today in two different positions, and the attacking core worked in sync. I have to recognize Kaiya (Boyd) who was the engine of the team today. For a first-year player to have such commitment and composure is astounding and she will go as far as her work ethic will take her."
