Women’s soccer rallies, drops close one at Longwood

03.21.2021 | Women's Soccer

FARMVILLE, Va.  – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team fell behind 2-0 at Longwood on Sunday afternoon, finding the back of the net in the 60th but were unable to even the score, falling by a score of 2-1.

"Proud of the response from our team," said head coach Clifton Bush. "We worked extremely hard and didn't go into a shell after falling behind."

The Lancers struck in the 40th and 49th, before Madison Carter buried a shot in the 60th, but Longwood would hold on after two last-minute shots from Asheville. Courtney O'Malley turned away six shots in the first half, and Bronwyn Luitweiler had three saves in the second for the Bulldogs.

"We were able to score a very high-quality goal because of our work in practice leading up to the game," said Bush. "Hopefully that will kick us on a bit for the final stretch."

What's Next
Asheville remains on the road for its next match, traveling to USC Upstate on Saturday with a scheduled kickoff at 2:00 p.m.

How it Happened
The Lancers registered two chances early, before Gillian Oyos pushed a shot wide and Skyler Chillson placed on frame that was collected by Madison Van Dyke. Chillson, Oyos and Carter created chances, but the Bulldogs could not break through. It was Longwood who would get on the board first, courtesy of a Catharine Forst goal in the 40th minute.

The Lancers carried the momentum into the second, with Alex Dinger doubling the lead in the 49th. As Longwood looked to run away with the game, Kaiya Boyd played a ball to Carter who sent it home to cut the lead in half and give Asheville its first score of the season. The Lancers controlled the pace for the following minutes, but in the 80th the Bulldogs earned a corner that led to an Oyos shot which was pushed just wide.  In the last minute of play, Carter had a shot blocked and Chillson pushed one just high as Longwood held on for the win.
