Bulldogs Earn Series Win with 4-2 Victory over Campbell
03.21.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team picked up its first Big South series victory Sunday as it defeated Campbell by a score of 4-2 to take the rubber match of the three-game series at Greenwood Field.
All four runs for the Bulldogs came in the first two innings Sunday. Sebastian Dunn plated Brandon Lankford with a single to give Asheville a 1-0 lead after one. Ty Kaufman would add to the Bulldog advantage in the second with a two-run single before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 4-0 Asheville after two.
The 4-0 lead proved to be more than enough run support for starter Kole Harris. Harris kept a Campbell offense that scored 23 runs in the series' first two games scoreless through the first four innings. Fellow senior Trey Jernigan came in to relieve Harris and kept Campbell's hitters off-balance as well. Campbell started to put a scoring threat against Jernigan in the eighth as it brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. With the Camels threatening, Head Coach Scott Friedholm handed the ball to Ethan Tressler to get the Bulldogs out of the jam, and he did just that striking out the next two hitters to preserve Asheville's 4-2 lead. Tressler came back out for the ninth and sat the Camels down in order to notch his second save of the weekend and give the Bulldogs the series win.
Asheville picked up seven hits against Campbell in Sunday's series finale. The Bulldogs also showed great patience at the plate as it worked seven walks in the contest. Lankford and Dominic Freeberger both reached base three times, with Freeberger picking up the lone multi-hit outing for Asheville going 2-for-3. Michael Groves reached twice with a single and a walk, while Grayson Preslar extended his hitting streak to five games with a 1-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
Harris was credited with the victory for the Bulldogs after tossing those four-shutout innings to begin the game. It marks Harris' first win of the season and moves his record to 1-0. Jernigan, meanwhile, is up to 13 strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched this season after striking out four in his outing Sunday. Finally, Tressler's outing Sunday put a stamp on a nice week for him. The Gallatin, Tennessee native tossed 4.2 innings out of the Bulldog bullpen, allowed one run on two hits, struck out four, and picked up a pair of saves in three appearances this week.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Gardner-Webb at Greenwood Field. The first pitch for that contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
