Women’s soccer drops 1-0 match to Radford

03.10.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team returned home on Wednesday afternoon, battling hard but falling 1-0 to Radford at Greenwood Field.

Maevyn Jones scored in the sixth minute, ultimately proving to be the game-winner for the Highlanders. Asheville had a bevy of chances, but could not convert, while Radford totaled seven shots on frame. Bronwyn Luitweiler turned away six shots, while Lindie Clark had two opportunities, including a header in the box that was collected by Radford's Lexi Dean.

What's Next
Asheville falls to 0-3 on the season, but will have a quick chance at redemption, welcoming Winthrop to town on Sunday for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.

"We talked post match about putting together two halves in order to get results in this conference," said head coach Clifton Bush. "We are maturing with every game and learning how to sustain high levels of execution and physicality."

How it Happened
Radford wasted no time applying pressure, with Jones and Gabi Paupst each registering chances early.  In the sixth minute, Brianna Oliver played a ball into Jones who fired a right-footed shot to the inside net to make the score 1-0. Asheville looked to respond, as Kaiya Boyd fired a shot that led to a corner kick in the 18th minute. Jones would challenge Luitweiler twice more before half but was denied each time.

The Bulldogs came out of the gates strong in the second, as Skyler Chillson created a chance just minutes before Clark headed a cross on net that was saved by Dean. After the sides traded chances, the Highlanders earned a corner kick in the 79th, but could not extend their lead. Although Asheville created some opportunities on the counter, they could not equalize, falling 1-0.

"The missing piece for us right now is creating and capitalizing on quality attacking chances," Bush said. "I have to give the attacking unit more options that maximize the immense talent our players have."
