Women’s soccer drops contest to Winthrop

03.14.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team welcomed Winthrop to town on Sunday afternoon, falling by a score 2-0 on senior day.

The Bulldogs certainly had chances in the match, registering a season-high 22 shots with eight being on frame. Winthrop, who totaled nine shots and five on frame, was able to break through in the second, getting a pair of goals from Katie Colwick and Laurin Uptegrove. Gillian Oyos totaled five shots with both herself and Madison Carter totaling two shots on goal.

"That was a tough 90 minutes. I thought we played two good halves, but the thing we have been missing all season is our scoring," said head coach Clifton Bush. "We did a good job of creating chances today, but we need to continue to create more high-quality looks.
What's Next
Asheville now sits at 0-4 on the season, hitting the road for its next two matches, beginning at Longwood on March 21 (Sunday). Courtney O'Malley registered her first start of the season, picking up three saves.

"We let Winthrop hang around early," said Bush. "And in the Big South Conference, there's too much parity so if you let that happen, it will come back to get you. We'll need to improve upon that and have a good week leading into the Longwood match."

How it Happened
Asheville came out of the gates firing, registering nine shots in the first 18 minutes of play. In the 20th, Winthrop created their first scoring opportunity but O'Malley was there to turn the attempt away. In the 29th, Chloe Lamenzo broke through and fired a shot that was saved by Ashlynn Harris. Neither team was able to score as the sides went into half 0-0.

In the second, it was Winthrop who came out aggressive, earning a corner before Katie Colwick put the Eagles on top in the 53rd. As Winthrop was looking to build on its lead, Grace Kwiatkowski made a sliding recovery tackle in the box to keep the score 1-0. The Bulldogs came back with a couple of opportunities of their own, but the Eagles doubled up the lead in the 72nd. In the 79th, Maya Gutman nearly scored followed by a Kaiya Boyd shot that was pushed high. From here, Asheville would run out of time, falling 2-0.
