ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Due to the University's COVID-19 health and safety protocols, UNC Asheville Men's Basketball Coach Mike Morrell will be unavailable to coach in Monday night's game against Longwood.
"While I wish I could be there at Kimmel Arena tonight with my team, I have been isolating at home and continue to follow all NCAA, Big South and UNC Asheville COVID-19 protocols," Morrell said. "I look forward to rejoining my team on the court. In the meantime, I will be cheering them on from my living room. Go Bulldogs."
"As a department, UNC Asheville Athletics is committed to the health and safety of its student-athletes and staff," stated Director of Athletics Janet Cone. "While Coach Morrell wishes he could be with his program, his team and staff have been preparing for the Big South Conference Tournament. The men's basketball players and staff remain committed to the COVID-19 protocols and after contact tracing and additional testing, look forward to competing Monday night. We wish Coach Morrell a speedy recovery and can't wait to have him back on campus."
Additionally, Evan Clayborne will not participate in the Big South Tournament due to an undisclosed medical issue unrelated to Covid.
Assistant Coach Neil Dixon will serve as acting head coach Monday night. The Bulldogs and Lancers tip off at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Hercules Tires Big South Men's Basketball Championship. Stay tuned to uncabulldogs.com for the latest news and updates.
