Tuesday’s final round canceled due to rain

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.  The UNC Asheville women's golf team was scheduled to finish round three of the Lady Bison Point Bay Classic on Tuesday, but the round was canceled due to inclement weather.

Asheville had a strong first outing of the season, finishing fifth in a field of nine (+73), shaving five strokes off its first round in round two.

"I honestly wasn't sure when this day would come," head coach Ericka Schneider said. "The day that I could say we were able to compete safely in a collegiate golf tournament again. Everything we've been doing with our protocols on campus and with our teams has proven successful, allowing us to travel to Panama City Beach to play in our first competitive event in almost a year."

Phoebe Carles was impressive in her collegiate debut, tying for ninth place individually with a score of 11-over-par (155). The freshman from Clinton, South Carolina, opened round one with a score of 80, but bounced back and shot a 3-over-par 75 in round two, registering birdies on holes No. 6, No. 9 and No. 11.

"With a team completely made up of freshman, all experiencing their first competitive college golf tournament at the same time, you could easily say this tournament was a blast from start to finish," said Schneider. "While there were plenty of things to improve on, there were so many great things to take away from this event at the same time! I'm so incredibly proud of Phoebe for placing top 10 in her first collegiate tournament and equally so with the team placing top 5!"

Madyson Gold and Anna McDonald, both freshman, finished one stroke apart from each other, with Gold tying for 26th place (164), and McDonald placing just one stroke behind her to tie for 29th place. Venecia Zaia and Hailey Pendleton, also rookies, tied for 37th place overall.

The Bulldogs are next scheduled to compete on March 1, when they open play in the Kiawah Island Classic.

"It was a great showing for a group of women that were experiencing everything for the first time every step of the way with this tournament. Unfortunately they didn't get the chance as today's round was canceled out due to weather, but their outlook on wanting to compete and always improve and do/be better is inspiring," Schneider said of her team. "I couldn't ask for a more motivated or excited group of women ready to compete. I am so lucky and thankful that I get to coach this group of young women and this is only the very beginning of what's to come with this team! Now it's time to hone in our skills over the next two and a half weeks in preparation for our second tournament of the semester at Kiawah."
