Women's golf wraps up play at Kiawah Island Classic Tuesday

03.02.2021 | Women's Golf

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team finished the third and final round of the 2021 Kiawah Island Classic on Tuesday, totaling a 319 at the Oak Point Golf Club to finish the largest collegiate golf country in the country in 32nd.

"This tournament started off really well out of the gate," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "This team showed what they are capable of against a tough field on day one. Having the lowest team score on the course we played one left us with some expectations that filtered into the next two days that lead to some simple mistakes."

Oak Point had been good to the Bulldogs, as the all-freshmen lineup opened up with the lowest team score (304) on Sunday. After round two on the Cougar Point Course Monday, Madyson Gold led the way for Asheville on Tuesday, firing a 3-over-par 75 with a pair of birdies on the front nine and one more on the back to finish in a tie for 78th place.

Amber Capote had strong first and second rounds, carding a 10-over-par 82 on Tuesday to finish tied for 100th place overall. Phoebe Carles was just a stroke behind Capote, posting a round-three 80 to total 236 for the tournament (T112). Hailey Pendleton rounded out the scoring for Asheville, posting back-to-back 82's to finish with a 242 overall.

"The second day we were playing a course blind as the field was split into two golf courses," Schneider said. "We let not seeing the golf course ahead of time intimidate us visually a little bit. With that, we didn't score as well as we could have, but I am incredibly proud of these young women with how they handled themselves on the golf course with their attitudes!"

The Bulldogs will have this weekend off, but return to the course on March 13, opening up play in the Low Country Intercollegiate on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

With a team of solely freshmen teeing it up in this tournament it was a great learning experience to have that early on in their career and be able to adapt to it," said Schneider. "After all, mindset is everything in the game of golf."
