Women's golf to open spring season in Lady Bison Classic

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's golf team is set to open up its spring 2021 season on Monday, competing in the Lady Bison Point Bay Classic. The tournament, which is hosted by Lipscomb, will be held on February 8-9 in Panama City, Florida.

"I cannot express into words how incredibly thankful I am for everything Janet Cone and our athletic department has done to give us the opportunity to compete safely," head coach Ericka Schneider. "It's been almost a year since I have coached my team in competition, so as you can imagine, saying we are excited for our first round tomorrow is an understatement! "

The field includes: Campbell, Eastern Illinois, Lipscomb, Indiana State, North Alabama, Tennessee Tech, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Troy. Teams and individuals will play 36 holes on Monday, finishing with 18 holes on Tuesday. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. each day and will be shotgun format.

The Bulldogs are a young squad, with six freshmen and just one upperclassman on the roster. The lone returnee is Baylee Evans, a junior from Lancaster, South Carolina. Evans competed in eight events before the 2019-20 season was shortened due to COVID. Evans' best finish of the year came at the Northern Kentucky Fall Classic (Oct. 7-8), where she shot a 36-hole score of 155 to tie for 12th place.

"I have so many players that are new to the program this year and 5 of those newbies are representing UNC Asheville at this tournament," Schneider said. "After having spent the entire fall semester with them and seeing their joy for the game and fire to compete again one day, I can't wait to see what we do over the next two days."
