Cross Country Travels to Radford Friday
02.11.2021 | Cross Country
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams will resume their spring season on Friday when they compete at Radford's Highlander Invitational. The women's race will get underway at 1 p.m., with the men's contest to follow around 1:45 p.m.
Last Time Out - The men's and women's teams both placed third in their respective races at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational late last month. Freshman Adam Hessler made the most of his first collegiate race, pacing Asheville with a time of 25:44.3. Hessler's time of 25:44.3, which was the third-fastest on the day, was not too far off the program's freshman record held by former Bulldog Chad Pearson (25:05) set back in 1999 and is the 17th-fastest time by a Bulldog in team history. The women's squad, meanwhile, also had some standout runs to start its season. The trio of India Appleton (13th- 19:20.9), Clara Wincheski (17th – 19:33.8) and Makenna Pallozzi (25th – 19:55.4) finished in the upper half of the 50-plus runner field.
Coach's Take – "We are once again thrilled about the opportunity to race and compete," said Head Coach Adam Puett. "This will be an exciting competition as it is a quad meet with Radford, Winthrop, Longwood, and UNC Asheville. We raced these same teams two weeks ago at Winthrop, so we will get the chance to test ourselves against Big South Conference competition and see how much better we are than two weeks ago. The distances this week are a little abnormal, but this gives our teams the opportunity to not worry about time. Instead, we can focus on competing, which is the most important factor in being successful."
Meet Info – Friday's races are slightly different as the women will be competing on a 4.7k course, while the men will run on a 7.5k route. Fans can follow along with the results as they become available after each race HERE.
A Brief Look Forward – After competing Friday, the Bulldogs will be prepping for the Big South Cross Country Championships. This edition of the Championships will take place on March 5 in Rock Hill, S.C. The 2019 Cross Country Championships saw the women's team place fifth and the men's team placing fourth. It marked the fourth consecutive year that the men's squad has finished fourth. With their fifth-place finish, the women have now finished in the top six in the Big South every year since 2012.
