ASHEVILLE, N.C. — UNC Asheville Athletics hosted its annual Our Turn to Play scholarship dinner on Tuesday (April 28) inside Kimmel Arena, setting a new fundraising record in support of women's athletics. The event was presented by First Bank, with additional support from Harry's on the Hill/GMC.
"Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this year's Our Turn to Play event our most successful yet," said Janet R. Cone. "Setting a new fundraising record speaks volumes about the incredible support behind our women's athletics programs. The investment from our Bulldog community continues to create meaningful opportunities for our student-athletes, and we are so thankful for the belief and generosity shown through this event."
Prior to the start of Tuesday's dinner, more than $400,000 had already been raised in support of women's athletics, including a generous $200,000 challenge gift from an anonymous donor designated for scholarships for female student-athletes. Supporters can still participate in the challenge by clicking here.
With more than 400 attendees and over 50 tables sold, the support and generosity of those both in attendance and contributing from afar helped generate an estimated additional $50,000 during the event. With those contributions, UNC Asheville Athletics has now raised more than $450,000 for female student-athlete scholarships, with additional gifts still being received.
This year's keynote speaker was Katie Meier, former Miami Hurricanes women's basketball head coach, Co-National Coach of the Year and Duke Hall of Famer.
Debbie Antonelli, college basketball analyst and former player, returned as emcee. Antonelli has served as emcee for Our Turn to Play for five years and was the 2022 Trailblazer Award recipient.
Brandy Mills was named the 2026 Trailblazer Award recipient. Mills is the founder of Brandy Mills Consulting where she partners with individuals, organizations and teams to cultivate strong leadership, strategic growth, and meaningful change.
