Men’s soccer battles, falls short to Furman
10.27.2021 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team hosted Furman in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon, getting a goal from Silas Goss but ultimately falling to the Paladins 2-1.
In the 69th minute, Goss rocketed home the first goal of his career, but Furman would equalize in the 72nd, capitalizing in the 84th to take the game 2-1.
"The boys ran hard and emptied their tanks," Giordano said. "Two small moments unfortunately cost us. We were the best version of us today though, and that's all we can ask for as a staff."
The Game at a Glance
- Bulldogs outshoot Paladins 13-8, five shots on frame
- Goss notches first career goal
- Leon Musial collects two saves
- Conor Behan, Jake Kemhadjian each total three shots
How it Happened
Furman would test Musial just minutes into the game, but the sophomore goalkeeper was there for his first save of the afternoon. In the fifth, Dominic Miller registered a chance that was collected by Ben Roberts. The teams traded chances and in the 42nd, Behan nearly broke the scoreless tie sending a free kick on frame but Roberts pushed it over the crossbar.
Asheville kept the pressure up in the second as Kemhadjian, Miles Peay and Nate Evans all had chances. In the 69th, a ball was whipped in from a free kick position by Mason Cookus as Wes Ferry touched it over to Goss who volleyed a right-footer into the back of the net. Furman showed the mettle however, answering two minutes later and adding a second in the 84th after a solid buildup. Kemhadjian was able to get one more chance, but couldn't get enough juice on the ball to sneak it by, as Furman claimed the match.
What's Next
The Bulldogs are back on the road this Saturday, visiting USC Upstate for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Spartans.
