Men’s soccer drops match at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team traveled down the mountain to Spartanburg on Saturday night, falling to USC Upstate 5-0.
The Spartans scored three in the first and two in the second. Asheville totals 10 shots, with the reserves accounting for 10 of them. The Bulldogs, who fall to 1-13-1 overall, return home Wednesday, capping off the season with a match against High Point at 6:00 p.m. USC Upstate improves to 2-3-2 in conference play and 4-8-3 overall.

The Spartans pressured early with two shots that were blocked, but Javier Torres broke through in the 5th. Just two minutes later, Torres doubled up the lead with his second of the half. The Bulldogs would get their first real chance in the 16th when Miles Peay brought the ball up the right flank and laid it off to Jake Kemhadjian who fired a shot high. Midway through the half, Asheville earned a free kick as Mason Cookus curled one just wide of the frame. The Spartans would add a third in the 27th, taking the three-goal lead into the break.
USC Upstate carried its momentum into the second, tacking on a fourth goal in the 53rd. The Bulldogs nearly pulled one back in the 67th as Brian Womé pushed a shot into the outside of the netting. The chance gave Asheville life, as Womé and Cookus forced Lukas O'Grady to make a pair of saves. The Bulldogs could not convert, and the Spartans added one more, taking the game 5-0.
