Golf finishes play at Edisto Island Invitational Tuesday

10.12.2021 | Women's Golf

EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team capped off play in the Edisto Island Invitational on Tuesday, finishing in sixth place as a team, with Venecia Zaia tying for 15th place individually.

One for the Record Books
The Bulldogs will remember this tournament, as they carded their two best team rounds ever (288, 290) while Zaia and Hailey Pendleton each set career lows. On Monday, Pendleton carded her career-best 71, while Zaia set a new program in Sunday's opening round, firing a 4-under-par 67 on the par-71 Plantation Course.

"I am so incredibly proud of the way this team played in this tournament. They have really been putting in the work, shifting our attention and intention at practice," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "The way their scores are trending are starting to reflect the work they are putting in. That is always such a great and rewarding feeling, when you can start to see the efforts of your hard work are paying off. With new school, individual and team records being set and personal bests being broken, we have so much good to take away from the event! We have two tournaments left in the season and we are right where we want to be going into them. Not the time to back off now, but to keep doing what we are doing with more intention behind our practice and knowing when we show up at the golf course we are there to work, and to work hard! I personally am so proud to coach this team and can wait to see what's next for us."

How they Finished
After her record-setting round Sunday, Zaia carded a 76 in round two and a 74 in Tuesday's final round to finish 4-over-par for the tournament, registering three birdies in the final 18. Madyson Gold was consistent, going 72, 72 before wrapping up with a 4-over-par 75 on Tuesday to finish T-20.

Teammate Phoebe Carles was just two shots behind Gold, birdieing three of her final 18 holes to finish +8 and T-22 overall. Amber Capote rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs, with her best round coming Monday when she posted a 2-over-par 73.

What's on Deck
The Bulldogs tee it up next on October 25 when they open play at the Terrier Intercollegiate.
