Bulldogs Begin Spring Season on a High Note at Winthrop

01.29.2021 | Cross Country

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams turned in a pair of strong outings to kick off the unique spring season Friday at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational. The men's and women's teams both placed third in their respective races that were made up entirely of Big South competition.

"It was great getting to watch our athletes compete today," said Head Coach Adam Puett. "We had some great individual performances on the men's and women's teams, but we have to work on getting our top five athletes closer together if we want to be at the top of the Big South Conference."

Asheville's men's team averaged a time of 26:44 in their first action since the fall of 2019. The Bulldogs had nine runners in the upper half of the 67-runner field, including freshman Adam Hessler. Hessler made the most of his first collegiate race, pacing Asheville with a time of 25:44.3. Hessler's time of 25:44.3, which was the third-fastest on the day, was not too far off the program's freshman record held by former Bulldog Chad Pearson (25:05) set back in 1999 and is the 17th-fastest time by a Bulldog in team history.

The women's squad, meanwhile, also had some standout runs to start its season. The trio of India Appleton (13th- 19:20.9), Clara Wincheski (17th – 19:33.8) and Makenna Pallozzi (25th – 19:55.4) led the way for Asheville finishing in the upper half of the field made up of over 50 runners.

Asheville will have a little bit of time until its next races, which will be at the Highlander Invitational at Radford on February 12.

"We have two weeks before we race again at Radford, so pack running is what we are going to continue to work on," Puett added.
