Asheville and Winthrop to meet on ESPNU on January 28

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – ESPNU has selected the UNC Asheville at Winthrop men's basketball contest for its Thursday, January 28, Big South Wildcard broadcast. The game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. inside the Winthrop Coliseum and will be the first appearance on ESPNU this season for the Bulldogs.
To accommodate ESPN's selection, the Asheville-Winthrop series has moved from its original dates of February 18-19 and will now be Thursday-Friday, January 28-29.
The match-up will mark the fifth meeting between the squads on ESPNU, with each school winning twice. It will be Winthrop's 13th appearance in the Big South's ESPNU Wildcard series, and 11th for Asheville.
The teams are currently 1-2 in the Big South in overall scoring (Winthrop – 83.2, UNC Asheville - 76.7) and league-games scoring (Winthrop – 83.9, UNC Asheville – 79.4).
Asheville was slated to host Presbyterian on January 4, but the game was postponed due to COVID issues within the Blue Hose Program.
A total of 32 games have been played in the Big South ESPNU Wildcard series that began in 2013-14, and with home teams going 22-10. The 32 games have been decided by an average of 8.66 points, with 19 of those being decided by single-digits.
