ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Mike Morrell has announced the addition of graduate transfer Evan Clayborne to the incoming class of 2020.
Clayborne comes to Asheville after spending the previous two years at North Carolina Central. Last season as a redshirt junior, the 6-6, 228-pound forward appeared in 30 of the Eagles' 31 games, racking up 15 starts. He scored 4.6 points per game while shooting 65.9 percent from the floor. He also averaged 4.0 rebounds per game.
"We are very excited to add Evan to our program for the upcoming year," Morrell said. "He is a big body whose athleticism will fit well in our style of play. Evan is a great student, and his abilities on the floor and his experience will be a welcomed addition to our Bulldog Family."
Clayborne will graduate from NC Central in May with an undergraduate degree in psychology. He earned Dean's List honors during his time at NC Central.
An athletic front line player from Dayton, Ohio, Clayborne led the Eagles in blocked shots during the 2019-20 campaign with 32. He pulled down a season-best nine rebounds on three occasions, including a road game at Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern.
Clayborne scored in double-digits four times during the season, including twice during conference play. He dropped 12 points on the road at Charleston Southern, shooting 6-of-6 from the floor. He had four games where he shot 100 percent while attempting at least three shots.
Prior to redshirting the 2018-19 campaign at NC Central, Clayborne spent his first two collegiate seasons at Cleveland State, playing in 49 total games. He shot 54 percent on field goals during his first two years, including 62.5 percent during his sophomore year.
As a senior at Thurgood Marshall High School, Clayborne earned first-team all-district and all-city honors. The year prior at Dayton Dunbar High School, he nearly averaged a double-double while helping his team to a 22-6 overall record and an appearance in the state semifinals. As a sophomore, the team went 22-3 and made it to the regional semifinals.
During his junior season at Dunbar High School, Clayborne was teammates with current Bulldog DeVon Baker, who was then a freshman. The pair also worked out with the same trainer in Dayton during their time in high school.
