03.09.2020 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball senior Blake Brown has been named the Big South Conference Starting Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 2-8. The league made the official announcement, Monday, March 9.
It is the first Starting Pitcher of the Week award of Brown's career and the first the Bulldogs have received since Greg Gasparro received the honor in April of 2018. Bulldog first baseman Easton Jones was named Big South Player of the Week earlier this season.
Brown earned his first win of the season Saturday in game two of UNC Asheville's doubleheader versus Coppin State. The senior right-hander threw 5.2 scoreless innings and struck out seven Eagles to earn the victory as the Bulldogs secured the 5-0 shutout. Brown allowed only one hit through his 5.2 innings as opposing batters hit a meager .059 versus the hard-throwing hurler.
The Bulldogs went 3-1 last week. After dropping their midweek contest to Furman, UNC Asheville bounced back for a three-game sweep of Coppin State, Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 17-4 throughout the three games.
UNC Asheville will take on Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga., Wednesday, March 11 before they face Gardner-Webb for three this weekend in Boiling Springs, N.C.
