Bulldogs Down Spartans in First Big South Matchup of the Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Asheville's women's tennis team took down USC Upstate, 6-1, in its first Big South Conference tilt of the season, Wednesday.
Lize Alet Morkel and Rosie Dickson exploded out of the gate, winning their doubles matchup at the No. 1 draw against Upstate's Elin Hellberg and Maria Jardim, 6-0. The stellar senior tandem of Emily Sidor and Lauren Watson-Steele delivered the doubles point to the Bulldogs with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 against Roberta Armani and Laura Illanes.
Dickson picked up the first Asheville point in singles play, taking down Armani in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Fellow freshman Ami Grace Dougah made it 3-0 Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Jardim at the No. 2 draw.
Watson-Steele sealed the first conference win of the season for the Bulldogs, dropping Morgan Valentine, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4. But the Dogs weren't done there, as Anastasia Horvat earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Illanes at the No. 6 draw.
After the Spartans got on the board with a victory at No. 1, all eyes turned to the third court as Sidor forced a third set against Gabriela Cervallos. Sidor fell behind in the match, dropping the first set 6-3, but rebounded with a 6-4 victory to even things. She would take the tiebreaker, 10-3, securing the Bulldogs' sixth point of the dual.
The Bulldogs return home and continue conference play as they welcome Winthrop to town for 2 p.m., Friday, showdown at the Asheville Racquet Club.
