Dengokl Scores 21 as Bulldogs Fall to Radford

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to Radford, 73-66, Wednesday evening inside Kimmel Arena.

Sonora Dengokl led the Bulldogs with 21 points as she scored 20+ for the second time this season. Nadiria Evans just missed on her seventh 20 point game of the season as she ended the night with 19. Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled 12 rebounds as she now has a double-digit rebound total in 16 games this season.

Both the Bulldogs and the Highlanders came out ready to play defense from the opening tip as neither team hit the five-point mark through the first five minutes of play. The Bulldogs tied the game at four with 5:26 left to play in the first quarter and Radford went ahead 6-4 with 4:28 left to play. UNC Asheville quickly tied the game with a layup from Evans but Radford quickly extended their lead to 12-6. The Bulldogs scored four more points through the final two minutes of the quarter to bring the score to 15-10 Radford at the end of one.

Radford scored six quick points coming out of the quarter break as the Highlanders took a 21-10 lead with 8:37 left to play in the second quarter. With just under five minutes to play, Radford hit a three to lead 30-18 as the Highlanders looked to be pulling away. The Bulldogs wouldn't go away as they were able to cut the deficit just slightly as Radford took a 36-26 lead into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs and the Highlanders traded baskets to open the third quarter but the Bulldogs cut the deficit to five as two free throws from Jordan-Brown made the score 41-36 with 5:48 left to play in the quarter. The Bulldogs cut Radford's lead to only three twice in the final four minutes of the quarter as UNC Asheville was down 46-43 with 2:32 left to play in the quarter. Radford took a seven-point lead with just over a minute to play in the quarter but a jump shot from Evans made the score 50-45 at the end of three quarters.

The Bulldogs outscored the Highlanders in the third quarter, 19-14. Evans scored eight points while Dengokl and Jordan-Brown each scored four. UNC Asheville 6-6 from the free-throw line in the quarter and did not put Radford at the line once.

The Bulldogs kept chipping away in the fourth quarter as Radford attempted to pull ahead but UNC Asheville refused to quit. The Bulldogs tied the game at 55 on an Evans' layup with 6:36 to go as the momentum seemed to be swinging in the Bulldogs' favor. The Highlanders once again started to pull away as the momentum swung back on their favor. Radford led 65-57 with just under four minutes to play but a 9-2 run from the Bulldogs cut the deficit to one as Zip Scott hit a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to play. The Bulldogs put Radford to the test as UNC Asheville forced the Highlanders to make free throws down the stretch. Radford proved to be ready for the test as they made six free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the 73-66 victory.
