Bulldogs Drop Regular Season Finale at High Point
03.07.2020 | Women's Basketball
HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point senior guard Camryn Brown scored 28 points to lead a red-hot shooting Panther squad to an 89-62 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon in the final regular-season game of the year.
The Bulldogs (15-14, 9-11 Big South) were led by junior guard Nadiria Evans with 20 points. Brooke Jordan-Brown just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
But it was not enough against a Panther (16-13, 14-6 Big South) squad that shot an amazing 55 percent (16-of-29) from beyond the arc. Skyler Curran added 19 points, while Jenson Edwards finished with 18 points for the home team.
The Bulldogs got off to a great start and led 12-4 midway through the first quarter before High Point responded with a 17-4 run to grab a 21-16 lead after the opening period. Brown led the opening charge with 10 points.
High Point's hot shooting ramped up in the second quarter as it knocked down four treys, two from Brown to build a 39-22 lead with three minutes left in the half. But Asheville responded with seven straight points to end the quarter. Freshman Faith Adams sank a long 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs some momentum going into halftime.
In the third quarter, High Point kept up its successful shooting from downtown as it went 5-of-7. The Panthers steadily built on the lead and led 63-46 entering the final period.
The Bulldogs could get no closer than 17 in the final quarter as the Panthers salvaged a season-split with Asheville.
Asheville had success scoring in the paint. The Bulldogs doubled up the Panthers as they outscored the home team, 44-22.
However, Asheville went to the line just 11 times and finished 4-of-11. High Point went 13-of-21. The Bulldogs did not shoot a free throw in the opening half.
The seeding and matchups for the Hercules Tires Women's Basketball Big South Championship will be released Saturday evening by the conference.
Â
NOTES – Nadiria Evans scored in double figures for the 21st time this year … Asheville had just nine turnovers in the game … the Bulldogs finish with a 15-14 regular-season overall record, marking the fifth straight year Asheville has posted an above .500 record in the regular season, the first time that's happened in school history.
