Bulldogs Come Up Just Short Against Wofford

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's women's tennis team suffered its first setback of the season in a close matchup, falling to Wofford, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Things started off well for the Bulldogs (3-1), as they secured the first point of the dual with victories at the first two doubles matchups. Lize Alet Morkel and Rosie Dickson, playing at No. 1, took down Wofford's Liz Massie and Jenna Vroman, 6-3. Ami Grace Dougah and Brianna Taranto also claimed a 6-3 decision at No. 2, downing Kay Kluska and Lilie Steryous.
Morkel picked up another point for the Bulldogs after dropping Vroman at No. 1 singles. She took a tightly-contested first set, 7-6, before securing the second set, 6-3.
Playing at the No. 2 spot, Dougah defeated Massie in similar fashion to her teammate at No. 1. Dougah took set one vie tiebreaker, 7-6. She came back with a strong performance in the second set, winning 6-1.
Wofford (4-0) took victories at the No. 3 and 4 spots, leaving the action in two wild matches at No. 5 and 6 to determine the outcome.
At the No. 5 spot, freshman Rosie Dickson took the first set off of Brittney Wilbur, 6-4. The second set was a barn-burner, with Wilbur winning in a tiebreaker, 7-6, to level the match. Wilbur would go on to win the decisive third set, 6-0.
Anastasia Horvat, playing at No. 6, had a similar outcome in her match, taking the first set, 6-3, against Ansley Hardeman. Hardeman responded with a 6-3 victory in set two, and would secure the third set, 6-0.
The Bulldogs return to action in a 1 p.m., Friday, contest against Chattanooga at the Asheville Racquet Club.
