Bulldogs Win in Exciting Fashion on Senior Day

02.22.2020 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball defeated the Spartans of USC Upstate, 53-45, Saturday inside Kimmel Arena.

UNC Asheville's four seniors, Zip Scott, Juliet Esadah, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Sonora Dengokl, were all honored prior to the game for their contributions to the Bulldog basketball program.

Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with her sixth game this season with 20 or more points as she scored 21 in the victory. Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled 20 rebounds and scored 11 points as she recorded her eighth double-double of the season.

The Bulldog defense played a strong first four minutes of the game as the Spartans didn't score in the game until the 5:44 mark in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the UNC Asheville offense scored seven unanswered points causing USC Upstate to call their first timeout of the game with just over six minutes left to play in the opening quarter. That timeout proved to be just what USC Upstate needed as they outscored UNC Asheville 9-3 over the final six minutes of the first quarter as the Bulldogs had a one point lead at the end of the first.

UNC Asheville tried to maintain their lead through the early portion of the second quarter as Upstate tied the game twice the first four minutes of the quarter but the Bulldogs didn't fall behind for the first time in the game until the 5:24 mark as the Spartans took a 17-14 lead.

The Spartans kept that lead through the remainder of the first half as the Bulldogs twice had the deficit cut to one but couldn't do any more than that. After being down by six at one point UNC Asheville cut the deficit to three as the Spartans had a 26-23 lead at halftime.

Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs at the half with 11 points while Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs held a slight rebounding advantage over the Spartans at the half as UNC Asheville led 27-26.

The Bulldogs came out of the half firing as UNC Asheville took the lead back less than a minute and a half into the third quarter. The Bulldog defense once again held USC Upstate scoreless for several minutes as the Spartans didn't score their first points of the second half until the 7:21 mark in the third. The Spartans and the Bulldogs continued trading buckets as UNC Asheville held the 33-30 advantage with five minutes left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs attempted to extend their lead multiple times in the remaining minutes of the third quarter but could not go ahead by more than three. The Spartans cut the deficit back to one multiple times as the Bulldogs held the narrow 37-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was huge for the Bulldogs as UNC Asheville got their first double-digit lead of the game. UNC Asheville went on a 12-0 run to open the quarter as Zip Scott capped off the run with a huge three-pointer to give the Bulldogs the 49-36 lead with 5:30 left to play.

The Bulldogs took a 51-38 lead with 3:14 left to play. That deficit proved to be too much for the Spartans to overcome as their comeback attempt was cut short as the Bulldogs claimed the 53-45 victory on Senior Day.
