Bulldogs Fall to Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb Tuesday evening by a score of 85-55.
Evonna McGill led the Bulldogs in scoring for the first time this season as the sophomore center scored 13, just missing her career high of 15. Brooke Jordan-Brown and Zip Scott each just missed on double-digits as they both finished with nine points. Jordan-Brown also corralled seven rebounds.
Gardner-Webb took control of the game early as they scored 27 points in the first 10 minutes of play. The Runnin' Bulldogs hit three shots from three during their high-scoring first quarter.
UNC Asheville began fighting back into the game in the early portion of the second quarter as they outscored Gardner-Webb 7-2 through the first two and a half minutes of the quarter to cut the deficit down to 12.
UNC Asheville was down by 13 at the second quarter media with the score set at 33-20 with 4:46 left to play until halftime. Sonora Dengokl led the Bulldogs with seven points while Nadiria Evans was next on the team with five. Each of the Bulldog centers, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Evonna McGill had four points.
A Zip Scott three pointer with just over a minute to play in the half cut the deficit back to single digits as Gardner-Webb led by just nine. The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly answered back with a made layup but it was Scott again with a three on the opposite end of the floor with 30 seconds left to play in the second quarter to bring the Bulldog deficit to eight as Gardner-Webb led 39-31 at the half.
The Bulldogs of UNC Asheville fought their way back into the game in the second quarter as they outscored Gardner-Webb 21-12 to overcome the first quarter deficit. UNC Asheville did a fantastic job of spreading the offense around in the second as five different Bulldogs scored five points or more in the first half.
Gardner-Webb came out of the half firing as they held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first four minutes of the second half. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb's offense put 12 points on the board in that time frame as Gardner-Webb extended their lead to 20. UNC Asheville briefly cut the deficit to 18 but Gardner-Webb quickly extended that to their largest lead of the game as they led 65-41 with 30 seconds left to play in the third quarter.
Gardner-Webb's third quarter success carried over into the fourth as UNC Asheville could not stop the Runnin' Bulldogs' offense. Gardner-Webb outscored UNC Asheville 46-24 in the second half of the game.
The Bulldogs shot 43% in the game but turned the ball over 26 times as Gardner-Webb scored 28 points form turnovers.
UNC Asheville will return to Kimmel Arena when they host Radford, Wednesday, March 4.
