Jerry Green to be Honored During Homecoming Basketball Game

02.19.2020 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE – Former UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Jerry Green will be honored during the second half of the men's Homecoming game, Saturday, as the Bulldogs take on Presbyterian.

The game, presented by Biltmore Farms Hotels, is set for 4:30 p.m., Saturday, inside Kimmel Arena.

Green will be accompanied by some of his players that helped the Bulldogs go from a struggling NAIA team to a successful Division I program. Green served as Asheville's head coach from 1979 through 1988 and led the Bulldogs to 150 wins and six straight winning seasons.

Along the way, Asheville advanced to two consecutive District 26 championship games and won at least 20 games three times. The Bulldogs knocked off Charlotte in two consecutive seasons as an NAIA program.

In the Bulldogs only season as a Division II program, Asheville won 20 games. In the 1986-87 season, the Bulldogs first as a Division I program, Green guided Asheville to a 15-11 overall record with two victories over Western Carolina, East Tennessee, Furman and Eastern Kentucky. In his final season, Jerry led the Bulldogs to one of the biggest wins in school history with a victory at Cal.

Green would go on to assist Roy Williams at the University of Kansas, and would have successful head coaching stops at Oregon and Tennessee. He was inducted into the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
