Three Bulldogs Score in Double-Digits as UNC Asheville Defeats Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball defeated Winthrop, 65-55, Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.
Three Bulldogs scored in double-digits in the victory. Nadiria Evans led all scorers in the game with 18 while Sonora Dengokl was right behind with 15 points. Zip Scott scored 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs. Brooke Jordan-Brown led UNC Asheville with 14 rebounds. It was the thirteenth time this season that the senior center has had 10 or more rebounds.
The Bulldogs and the Eagles traded baskets through the first half of the first quarter as UNC Asheville led 12-9 at the first media timeout of the game. UNC Asheville scored eight more points through the final four minutes of the first quarter as they had a 20-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Neither scored in the first two minutes of the second quarter but a Tamiah Lewis three-pointer with 7:36 left to play in the quarter put the Bulldogs up by 10 forcing Winthrop to call a timeout with UNC Asheville up 23-13. The Bulldogs kept their lead at 10 as they led 27-17 with five minutes left to play. UNC Asheville threatened to pull away as they were still up by 10 at the two minute mark but Winthrop refused to give in as they went on a 6-0 run to end the first half only down by four as the Bulldogs led 30-26 at halftime.
Jordan-Brown corralled 10 rebounds in the first half of the game while Jordan-Brown, Dengokl and Scott all had six points at the midgame break.
Winthrop came out of the half determined to even the score as they scored three points in the first 20 seconds of the third quarter to cut the Bulldogs lead to one. That's as close the Eagles would get though as the Bulldogs would outscore them 6-0 through the next four minutes of play to bring the score to 36-29. UNC Asheville once again increased their lead to 10 with 2:34 left to play in the third as the Bulldogs were up 43-33 as Winthrop called another timeout at the two minute mark.
After a made layup by the Eagles cut the Bulldogs lead back to single digits, Zip Scott stepped up and knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Bulldogs a 46-35 lead with just under a minute to play in the third quarter. Two made free-throws from Sonora Dengokl and a huge stop on the defensive end of the floor secured a 48-35 Bulldog lead at the end of the first three quarters.
Winthrop cut the Bulldogs lead down to nine once again as UNC Asheville had 50-41 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the game. An Amaryah Corpening layup at the 4:42 mark increased the Bulldog lead back to 14 but the Eagles quickly cut it once again as UNC Asheville led 57-47 with just under four minutes to play.
Dengokl knocked down two free throws with a minute and half to play to put the Bulldogs ahead 62-49 but four unanswered points from the Eagles cut the Bulldog lead back to nine with just under a minute to play. The Bulldogs traded buckets with the Eagles the final minute of the game to secure the 65-55 victory.

The Bulldogs will next travel to Charleston, S.C. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Charleston Southern, Tuesday, February 18.
