Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker to Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball came up just short versus Charleston Southern Tuesday evening as the Bulldogs fell, 56-54, inside the Buc Dome.
Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Sonora Dengokl followed with 12. Zip Scott corralled a career-high 10 rebounds while Brooke Jordan-Brown secured 11 boards in the game.
Neither offense could seem to get going through the first five minutes of the game as five total points were scored between the two teams through the early portion of the game. UNC Asheville led 4-1 with 4:57 left to play in the first quarter. The Buccaneers began to break through coming out of the first media timeout as they outscored the Bulldogs 14-5 through the final five minutes of the quarter.
Charleston Southern extended their lead to 16-9 with 8:54 left to play in the second quarter but three-pointers on back to back possessions from Nadiria Evans and Tamiah Lewis brought the Bulldogs within three with 7:46 left to play until halftime. After the Buccaneers pushed their lead back to five, UNC Asheville scored on consecutive possessions once again to cut the deficit to one, forcing Charleston Southern to use their first timeout to combat the Bulldogs' momentum.
Coming out of the timeout the score stayed steady at 20-19 for a full minute before Faith Adams put the Bulldogs ahead with a three-pointer with 4:30 left to play in the first half. Charleston Southern took the lead back with 2:14 left to play but a Brooke Jordan-Brown layup a few seconds later put the Bulldogs back out front. UNC Asheville was in the drivers' seat as they had the final possession and Sonora Dengokl extended the Bulldogs lead with a jump shot with five seconds left to play to give UNC Asheville the 28-25 lead at the halftime break.
The Buccaneers scored quick coming out of the half as they cut UNC Asheville's lead to one but that's as close as they would get as UNC Asheville extended their lead to seven with just under six minutes left to play in the half. Adams gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game as she hit two free throws with just over a minute and half left to play in third to give the Bulldogs a nine point lead with the score at 45-36. Prior to that point neither team had led by more than seven in the game. The Buccaneers quickly cut UNC Asheville's lead back to seven but Evans extended it to nine with a fastbreak layup with just under 30 seconds left to play as the Bulldogs had a 47-38 lead at the end of three quarters.
The Buccaneers weren't going away as they once again cut the Bulldogs' lead as UNC Asheville was up by only six with seven minutes left to play. Charleston Southern continued chipping away as the Bulldogs only led by one with just under five minutes left to play in the game. After a Bulldog turnover, the Buccaneers tied the game with a free throw to make the score 49-49 at the 4:30 mark.

Neither team could seem to score in the next minute of play as that score remained with one minute left to play.

The Bulldogs then got a stop on the defensive end and called a timeout with four seconds left to play while down by two. A last second shot from UNC Asheville fell just short as the Buccaneers claimed the victory.

The Bulldogs will return to Kimmel Arena, Saturday, February 22, for a 2 p.m. matchup with USC Upstate as UNC Asheville will celebrate Homecoming and Senior Day.
