UPDATE: Baseball Scrimmage Moved to November 6

10.26.2020 | Baseball

*UPDATED*

ASHEVILLE, N.C.
– The UNC Asheville baseball team will compete in an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday November 6. The scrimmage, which will be streamed live or on replay on ESPN+, is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch. Due to existing CoVID-19 protocols, no fans will be allowed to attend the scrimmage in person.

Coach's Take – "Coming off a shortened spring season, where we lost 40 games and 25-30 opportunities to play on ESPN+, our team is excited to have this opportunity," said UNC Asheville Head Baseball Coach Scott Friedholm.  "We want everyone to be involved, so their families get a chance to see them play.  The guys have done a tremendous job this fall, on and off the field, to allow us to continue to practice and scrimmage. This is a nice reward for all their hard work.   We also want to thank our external relations team (Andy Fisher, Mark Godin, and Brian Yohe) and ESPN+ for making this happen."

A Look Back at 2020 – The abbreviated 2020 season saw the Bulldogs finish with a 5-11 record. Some highlights from the shortened campaign included Asheville's three-game sweep of Coppin State in early March and senior Blake Brown being named the Big South's Starting Pitcher of the Week. Following the season, Brown signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Looking forward to 2021 – The 2021 Bulldogs return several key players from last season while mixing in some new ones. Offensively, Asheville returns 2019 All-Big South First Team honoree Brandon Lankford. Lankford needs just eight more home runs to become the program's all-time home run leader. On the mound, the Bulldogs return the bulk of their pitching staff from 2020. One of those returners is Ryan Douglas, who posted a 1-2 record with a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings pitched as a freshman last spring.
