Bulldogs Secure Huge Road Victory by Upending Spartans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball defeated the Spartans of USC Upstate, 68-48, Monday evening in Spartanburg, S.C.
All in all, 11 Bulldogs scored in the affair. Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 14 while Sonora Dengokl wasn't far behind as she scored 12 in the victory. All five Bulldog starters scored eight points or more.
Turnovers proved to be a difference maker in the game as the Bulldogs forced the Spartans to turn the ball over 20 times and UNC Asheville scored 23 points off of turnovers. On the other end the Bulldogs turned the ball over only six times.
The Bulldogs and the Spartans traded baskets through the first 10 minutes of play as only two points separated the two at the end of the first quarter. Six different Bulldogs contributed with baskets as UNC Asheville scored 13 in the first. The Bulldog defense once again wreaked havoc on the Spartans as UNC Asheville forced four turnovers and scored six points off of turnovers.
The Bulldog offense broke through in the second quarter as UNC Asheville scored 24 points to take a 37-30 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs forced a total of 10 turnovers in the first half of play and scored 15 points off of turnovers. The Bulldogs found themselves down 22-20 with seven minutes left to play in the half before going on a 12-0 run to claim the lead. Nine Bulldogs scored in the first half of play while all five starters scored five points or more. UNC Asheville secured five steals and eight assists in the first 20 minutes.
UNC Asheville held the Spartan offense to only eight points in the third quarter of play. Meanwhile, the Bulldog offense doubled that as UNC Asheville scored 16 in the quarter. The Bulldogs began the quarter with a 7-3 run that forced USC Upstate to take a timeout just two minutes into the quarter. The Bulldogs didn't stop there as they went on to go on a 9-2 run in the final six minutes of the quarter to take a 53-38 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Bulldogs outscored USC Upstate 15-10 in the final quarter to secure the victory. Evans and Dengokl each scored four points and Dengokl also brought in four rebounds in the quarter. Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled five rebounds in the final quarter of play to give her a total of 11 for the game.
The Bulldogs stole the ball a total of 12 times in the game. Eight different Bulldogs recorded a steal with Evans, Jordan-Brown, Evonna McGill and Jimeshia Lawson each securing two takeaways in the victory.
The Bulldogs will be back in action, Thursday, January 9, when they take on High Point at 6 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.
