Dengokl’s 26 Points Leads Bulldogs Past Panthers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball defeated the High Point Panthers, 76-60, Thursday evening inside Kimmel Arena in exciting fashion.
Redshirt senior Sonora Dengokl led the Bulldogs with 26 points. Dengokl's 26 points are a season high and are the most she has scored in a single game since her record-breaking 36 point performance versus USC Upstate on Jan. 15, 2019. The Sumter, S.C. native shot 75% from the field, her highest mark of the season, and went eight for 11 from the free throw line. She also totaled two steals and a block.
Nadiria Evans also scored in double-digits for the ninth time this season as she finished the game with 17 total points while hitting five from the field. Evans was fouled seven times in the game and made seven shots from the free throw line. She also contributed with one steal and three assists.
Brooke Jordan-Brown once again corralled a double-digit rebounding total with her second highest total of the season with 16. It is the seventh time this season that the senior center has secured 10 or more rebounds. She is averaging 14.2 rebounds per game through her first five Big South Conference games this season.
The Bulldogs put up 18 points in the first quarter of the game with Dengokl scoring 10 of those early points while going four for four from the field. The Panthers answered with 14 points in the first quarter as both teams battled through the opening minutes.
UNC Asheville's offense mimicked its first quarter performance in quarter two as the Bulldogs scored 18 points again to take a 36-30 lead into the halftime break. Nadiria Evans became the second Bulldog to score 10 points in a quarter in this game as she shot three for six from the field and tallied four made free throws in the second quarter.
Denogkl and Evans each finished the half with 12 points while Jordan-Brown claimed nine rebounds through the first 20 minutes of play. UNC Asheville scored half of their points in the paint in the first half and forced a total of 10 turnovers in the first and second quarters.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the third quarter as UNC Asheville scored 24 points and limited High Point to only eight. At the end of 30 minutes of play the Bulldogs were up by 22 points with a score of 60-38. Dengokl matched her first quarter point total by scoring 10 in the third quarter as well. Jordan-Brown added five more rebounds to her total while Zip Scott scored five points in the quarter.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 25 point lead early in the fourth quarter but the Panthers clawed their way back to outscore the Bulldogs by six in the final quarter of the game. UNC Asheville's huge third quarter lead proved to be vital as the Bulldogs secured the 76-60 victory over the Panthers.
UNC Asheville will have a quick turnaround as they face off with Radford at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, January 11, in Radford, Va.
