Bulldogs Open 2020 Campaign with Victory Against Tusculum

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's women's tennis team opened its season in strong fashion, taking down Tusculum, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the indoor courts of the Asheville Racquet Club.
The Bulldogs (1-0) started the match on the right side of doubles action to secure the first point. Ami Grace Dougah and Brianna Taranto defeated Africa Mota and Julia Lopez, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles. The senior tandem of Lauren Watson-Steele and Emily Sidor battled Martina Marras and Sarah Primik at No. 3 doubles, but came away with a hard-earned 7-5 victory.
The dual moved into singles competition, and the Bulldogs shined, taking five-of-six matches from Tusculum. Lize Alet Morkel defeated Lopez, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while the seniors took care of business in the middle of the lineup. Sidor took down Mota, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot, and Watson-Steele took care of Primik, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.
Playing at No. 5 singles, Rosie Dickson defeated Martina Marras, 6-2, 7-5, while Anastasia Horvat locked in a close one with Tusculum's Amber Lackey for the final match of the day in the No. 6 spot. Lackey won the first set, 6-4, but Horvat answered back to take the second 6-2, and won the decisive third set 10-8.
The Bulldogs return to action when they welcome UNC Greensboro to town for a 3 p.m., Sunday, showdown at the Asheville Racquet Club.
