Oyos Scores Golden Goal to Lift Bulldogs Over Spartans
09.25.2019 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Bulldogs defeated Big South Conference rival USC Upstate, 1-0, in the second overtime period on a goal by sophomore Gillian Oyos, on Wednesday evening at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in overtime matches this season.
Oyos found the back of the net on a shot that was just out of reach of the Spartan goalkeeper on a corner kick by Alice Walker. Walker's corner two hopped right to Oyos, who kicked it into the top right corner with 2:26 left in the second overtime period.
Oyos' goal and Walker's assist were both firsts of the season for the two sophomores.
UNC Asheville outshot the Spartans 21-9. The Bulldogs' 21 shot attempts were the most they have put up versus a Division I opponent this season.
The Bulldogs put 12 shots on goal in the match. Maya Gutman led the team with four shots on goal, while Oyos followed with three. Skyler Chillson and Chloe Lamenzo each totaled two shots on goal throughout the 107 minutes of play.
"At the end of the day, this is a big attacking performance for us," head coach Clifton Bush said. "To be able to put 21 shots up with 12 on frame and force keepers to make saves, I think it gave us a bit of confidence that we can finally get through the scoring draught. I think for us, now that we have rippled the net a little, we can continue to do so."
USC Upstate gained an advantage in corner kicks early in the match as the Spartans led in the category 4-0 at the end of the first 45. The Spartans would go on to secure two more in the second half while the Bulldogs took three, but neither team could turn those corners into goals.
Neither team was able to ripple the net in the first overtime period, with the Spartans taking the only shot between the two teams.
The Bulldogs took two corners in the second overtime period but couldn't capitalize on the first. The second was a perfectly placed corner by Walker so that Oyos could propel the Bulldogs to their third win of the season.
The Bulldogs will now have a week off before their next match which will take place at Greenwood Field, Wednesday, October 2, versus High Point.
Cliff Notes
On getting that first conference win under the belt:
"It is a long season, 10 matches against what is a quality group of tight teams," Bush said. "I think getting one early to a team that quite frankly is slated to finish five or six in the rankings is a testament to our players. I'm super proud and pleased. Big shoutout to the fans really for sticking with us, they were brilliant and kept us in it! They kept us alive, you could hear the energy and we fed off of it in order to get through 107 minutes of the game."
On staying tough through 107 minutes of play:
"I think what you see is the quality of Maya [Gutman] and Gillian [Oyos], who are two of the most fit people I have ever had the privilege to coach and their will and desire is just there. For Maya to defend like that for a 107 minutes and for Gillian to hit an absolute crusher in that time. There's not a lot of players that can pull that kind of thing off. I think that you can see that our grit and our determination finally paid off on the right side of the scoreboard."
On the bench providing valuable minutes:
"Depth is the key to success they say. I think having 14, 15, 16 or even 17 starters is absolutely a necessity. I think our ability to actually put players in who give us something different based on the momentum in the moments of the game is huge. I mean Mackenzie Gower, this was her first minutes of the year after being sick for the past six weeks. She gives us something in the attack that we may have been missing. Isabella Piso and her speed, pace and ability. I think they all complement what I would say is a pretty stalwart back four that we have really started to rely on."
