Bulldogs Fall to High Point Wednesday
10.02.2019 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville fell, 2-1, to High Point Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Freshman Barrett Eidson put the Bulldogs on the board in the eighth minute of the game with her first career goal. Eidson took a pass from Skyler Chillson down the middle that put her one on one with the Panther goalie. The freshman midfielder rippled the net on a shot that was just out of reach of the diving goalie.
High Point evened the score less than a minute later on a goal by Carsyn Gold. The Panthers then took the lead in the 22nd minute on a header by Keegan Bragg on a free kick from Sam Gerhart.
The Bulldog defense stepped up in a big way as the Panthers were held to just the two goals in the match. The Panthers took a total of 10 shots in the match, five in each half.
The Panthers had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1. The Bulldog defense kept High Point from capitalizing on their five attempts from the corner.
The Bulldogs had four shot attempts in the second half but could not seem to find the back of the net in the final 45 minutes.
The Bulldogs will travel to Radford, Va. for a matchup with the Radford Highlanders, Saturday, October 5. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
Cliff Notes
"At the end of the day, the adversity that we have had, you can see now we are starting to deal with that adversity with a positive momentum," head coach Clifton Bush said. "We almost had a great goal scoring opportunity there at the end. Everybody is able to see their role, even when it is different. From Olivia Lenderman playing up top to Ava Nkadi playing at the centerback, which is not normal for her, and Emily playing the rightback position. For us to be able to have that kind of versatility is huge. Credit to High Point for the job that they did but for what our players did, I'm very very proud."
On the defensive effort the Bulldogs put up in the second half today:
"We had a chance to win it there with a minute left to go," Bush said. "The defense kept us there with a tremendous 45 so that opportunity was even possible. We had a lot of chop and change with lots of injuries and lots of players going down. Credit to Skyler Chillson for stepping into the captain role with Grace Kwiatkowski out today. I think at the end of the day, the defense definitely played for each other as opposed to trying to play in a system. At the end of the day they just played for the woman on the right and the woman on the left of them and I think that effort is what is going to carry them."
