Bulldogs Tripped Up in First Match of Georgia Southern Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – UNC Asheville's volleyball team took the first set against Georgia Southern, Friday, in the Georgia Southern Invitational, but ultimately fell to the host Eagles, 3-1.
Senior Ansley Rooks lead the way offensively with 10 kills to go along with 12 digs to finish with a double-double. With her fourth dig in the match, Rooks reached 500 digs for her career.
Senior Kailey Hackett came off the bench and played multiple roles, recording eight kills, nine assists and seven digs.
Defensively, Julia Borges had six total blogs, including two solos, to go along with 10 digs and six kills, while Kasey West (11) and Molly Hackett (10) each had double-digit digs as well.
A number of Bulldogs were able to see action in the contest, as Carter Kennedy and Anna Skryd played in three sets, while Peyton McClinton and Harley Middleton took the floor in two sets.

SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: The Bulldogs were able to take an early lead in the match, paced by three kills from Ansley Rooks in the first set. The set was close throughout, as neither team built more than a four-point lead. A 3-0 run gave the Eagles the lead, 19-18, but the Bulldogs responded with two straight points to reclaim the lead, which led to an Eagles' timeout. Though the Eagles evened things up at 20, the Bulldogs secured five of the next six points, including a kill by Cecilia Stack to close things out.
SET 2, EAGLES WIN 25-22: The second set started much like the first in the early going with neither team separating itself. GSU held a 9-6 lead before the Bulldogs ripped off five consecutive points, spearheaded by a kill from Molly Hackett and a service ace from Grace Volk. The Eagles responded with a six-point run of their own and did not relinquish the lead, despite back-to-back kills from Rooks down the stretch in a three-point run.
SET 3, EAGLES WIN 25-17: Trailing 8-4, the Bulldogs took the lead with a five-point outburst, bookended by kills from Rooks and Kailey Hackett. UNC Asheville led 12-11 after the teams exchanged blows, but the momentum of the set and the match would shift on an eight-point run from GSU to put the home team up. 19-12. The Bulldogs kept fighting, securing four of the next five points, but the Eagles would end up taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
SET 4, EAGLES WIN 25-17: The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead early, and despite a pair of kills from Julia Borges, would push the lead to seven, 11-4. The Bulldogs took six of the next nine points, highlighted by a pair of Kailey Hackett kills, to bring the score to 14-10, but the lead would not dip below four as the Eagles closed things out on their home court.

The Bulldogs return to action at the Georgia Southern Invitational in the first match of Saturday, set to begin at 10 a.m., against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
