Asheville Splits Day One of Bulldog Invitational

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball opened the 2026 season with a split on Friday, earning a dominant 3-0 victory over Montreat before falling to Boise State in three sets inside the Justice Center.
The Bulldogs opened the day with a 25-13, 25-8, 25-9 sweep of Montreat to begin the season 1-0. Asheville was dominant offensively throughout the match, finishing with a .449 hitting percentage while holding the Cavaliers to a -.063 clip. The Bulldogs recorded 36 kills with just five attack errors and added 17 service aces.
MATCH ONE – UNC ASHEVILLE 3, MONTREAT 0
Asheville took control midway through the opening set and never looked back. After the teams traded points early, the Bulldogs began to pull away and closed the frame with a 25-13 victory.
The Bulldogs were even more efficient in the second, hitting .538 with 15 kills and just one error on 26 attempts. Asheville carried that momentum into the third set, hitting .500 on its way to a 25-9 victory and the sweep.
Sarah Wadsworth helped lead Asheville's offensive attack with seven kills on 12 attempts without committing an error, finishing with a .583 hitting percentage. Wadsworth also added four service aces.
Albertine van der Goot led the Bulldogs with nine kills while hitting .471, while Addie Brookbank turned in an all-around performance with seven kills, 10 digs and three aces.
Elise Jensen directed the Asheville offense with 25 assists to go along with three kills and three block assists. Cadence Nichols added four kills on seven swings for a .429 hitting percentage and three block assists.
The Bulldogs also caused problems from the service line throughout the match. Izzy Perkins joined Wadsworth with a team-high four aces, while Lydia Pate and Brookbank each contributed three.
MATCH TWO – BOISE STATE 3, UNC ASHEVILLE 0
Asheville returned to the court Friday evening to face Boise State, with the Broncos earning a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 victory.
The third set was Asheville's strongest of the match, as the Bulldogs put pressure on the Broncos late in the frame. Trailing 19-15, Asheville rattled off three consecutive points, including back-to-back blocks from Pate and van der Goot, to pull within one at 19-18. Boise State answered with three straight points and held off the Bulldogs down the stretch to secure the sweep.
Van der Goot and Brookbank paced the Asheville attack with 10 kills apiece. Van der Goot added four block assists, while Brookbank recorded a team-high 13 digs to finish with a double-double.
Jensen recorded 20 assists and nine digs, while Perkins added 10 digs. Wadsworth finished with six kills and eight digs.
At the net, Nichols recorded one solo block and two block assists, while Pate contributed three block assists as Asheville totaled six blocks as a team.
The Bulldogs return to the court on Saturday, Aug. 29, for the final day of the Bulldog Invitational, taking on MTSU at 4 p.m. inside the Justice Center.
