Strong Second Half Lifts Bulldogs Over Lions
09.11.2019 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team defeated the Mars Hill Lions, 2-0, Wednesday evening at Greenwood Field.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half as the game remained deadlocked in a 0-0 draw after the first 45 minutes. There were a total of eight shots taken in the first half with the Bulldogs taking five.
The Bulldogs (2-4) took to the attack in the second half by matching their first half shot total within the first five minutes of the second half. In total, the Bulldogs took 21 shots in the second half, by far the most they have taken in any half this season.
Freshman Isabella Piso broke the deadlock in the 71st minute on her first career goal. Piso took the shot from distance off of a deflection by the opposition and sent it soaring just out of reach of the Lion goalkeeper to put the Bulldogs on the board.
A few moments later, in the 74th minute, Skyler Chillson, staring down a line of defenders, kicked the ball out of the box to junior Chloe Lamenzo who then took a shot on goal that found the back of the net for the Bulldog's second goal of the game. Lamenzo's goal was her first in a Bulldog uniform.
The Bulldog defense proved to be strong once again in their second shutout of the season, with the Lions taking only three shots in the match.
Bryson Lee and Courtney O'Malley combined for the shutout from between the pipes. Lee started her third consecutive game and picked up a save in the only shot on goal that the Lions were able to get off during the match.
The 2-0 score would stand as the Bulldogs picked up their second victory of the season and their first at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch, Sunday, September 15, for a 2 p.m. matchup with Davidson at Greenwood Field.
