Bulldogs Fall to Mountaineers Sunday Afternoon
09.01.2019 | Women's Soccer
BOONE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team dropped a match, 6-0, to Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
"There's no way to sugarcoat it," head coach Clifton Bush said. "Unfortunately, we were second best today. Now for our squad we have to ask a lot of questions of ourselves. How resilient are we? How do we respond to adversity? Does our cohesion really help us through the tough times? These are the important things we will have to address this week as we look forward to The Citadel."
The Mountaineers came out strong as they scored a goal in the first minute of the game off the foot of Tess Cairney. The Bulldogs responded in the 28th minute as Ava Nkadi looked to tie the game with a low shot to the center of the goal that was saved by a tremendous effort from the Mountaineer goalkeeper.
The Mountaineers found the back of the net two more times in the first half with goals in minute 34 and 38 to take a 3-0 Appalachian State lead into the half.
Gillian Oyos attempted to get the Bulldogs on the board in minute 46 with a shot attempt that missed just right of the goalpost.
The Appalachian State offense maintained their aggression in the second half with two more goals in the first five minutes of the half to give the Mountaineers a 5-0 lead.
"Tactically, we were unable to control the spaces that we looked to control and as a staff we have to take responsibility for that," Bush said. "Our ability to control rhythm and tempo are hallmarks of our style."
In total, UNC Asheville would get off three shots on goal that were all saved by the Mountaineer goalkeeper.
Appalachian State would hit the back of the net one more time for a final score of 6-0.
"The good thing is games like this force you to look inside and make improvements and we have a long season to go, with all but three games played, so we will use this as a platform to learn and grow and improve as we finish up a nonconference schedule and look towards Big South competition," Bush said.
The Bulldogs will take the field again, Friday, September 6, when they take on The Citadel at 4 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
