Morrell Adds Neil Dixon to Coaching Staff

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville second-year men's basketball head coach Mike Morrell announced the addition of Neil Dixon as an assistant coach on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.
Dixon joins the UNC Asheville men's basketball program after spending the last six seasons, including the last four as head coach, at Louisburg College of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
A native of Lewisburg, W. Va., Dixon compiled an incredibly impressive record of 101-34 (.749) in his four seasons at the helm of the NJCAA program in Louisburg, N.C. Dixon coached three All-Americans during his time in charge of Louisburg.
"We are thrilled by the addition of Neil Dixon to our program," Morrell said. "Coach Dixon is a winner, who as a former head coach adds a tremendous amount to our coaching staff. He is also very familiar with the state of North Carolina, and his strong pedigree all the way around makes him an ideal choice to help us continue to progress our program."
In his first season in charge at Louisburg in 2015-16, Dixon guided the Hurricanes to the NJCAA national tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Hurricanes won the NJCAA Region X regular season and conference tournament titles.
Dixon helped the 2016-17 Hurricanes to a 30-5 overall record. Louisburg finished the season as national runner-ups, falling in the NJCAA national title game. Dixon was tabbed as the Region X Coach of the Year.
Louisburg once again won the region regular season and tournament championships in finishing with 28 victories in the 2017-18 season.
Prior to coming to Louisburg as an assistant for the 2013-14 season, Dixon made one year assistant coaching stops at Fairmont State and West Virginia Tech. He was also an assistant basketball coach for three seasons at Greenbrier East High School in Lewisburg, W. Va.
As an assistant coach at Louisburg, Dixon worked for former Bulldog student-athlete and Head of Basketball Operations (2000-02) Mark Vanderslice, who is currently the head coach at NCAA Division II USC Aiken.
Dixon graduated from West Virginia University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and again in 2008 with a Master of Science in Athletic Coaching.
In 2012, Dixon married Gabrielle, and the couple has two sons, Rhett and Wells.
