ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville dropped both games of its Senior Day doubleheader with Radford on Friday, May 10, at Greenwood Field.

Radford (26-24, 17-7 Big South) earned an 8-2 win over UNC Asheville (14-33, 8-16 Big South) in the first game of the doubleheader before narrowly taking a 7-4 win in 12 innings in the second game.

UNC Asheville baseball honored its seven seniors in-between games of the doubleheader.

Game One: Radford 8, UNC Asheville 2
The Highlanders opened the game by scoring a single run in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs matched with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

Jake Madole sent home the run for the Bulldogs when he doubled in Greg Gasparro, who had singled to start the inning.

Radford would plate three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead, but UNC Asheville starting pitcher Austin Fahr really settled things down over the next few innings to allow the Bulldogs to cut into the Highlander lead at 4-2 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chris Troost brought home the run in the bottom of the sixth when his sacrifice fly scored Danny Wilson from third.

The game would remain 4-2 until the top of the ninth when Radford plated four runs to eventually pick up the six-run win.

Fahr was the star for the Bulldogs in game one. One of five Bulldog pitchers in the game, Fahr dealt six strong innings in relief of starter Jacob Edwards (3-4), who took the loss in the game. Fahr allowed no earned runs and the Highlanders scattered four hits when he was on the mound.

Radford starter Andrew Nardi (4-3) garnered the win in pitching the first five innings. Cameron Fritz pitched the final 3.2 innings to earn the save for the Highlanders.

Radford out-hit the Bulldogs, 8-4, in the game. Gasparro had two of UNC Asheville's four hits. He was 2-for-4 overall with one run scored. Dominic Freeberger and Madole had the other Bulldog hits.

Game Two: Radford 7, UNC Asheville 4 (12 Innings)
The second game started at 3:05 p.m. and ended up encompassing roughly six hours due to a lengthy weather delay, but for the first eight innings it was truly a pitchers' duel.

The Bulldogs took an early 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first and second game starting pitcher Jordan Carr pitched six scoreless innings to really set the tone before the lengthy weather delay after his fourth and final strikeout of the day around 4:40 p.m. Carr allowed just three hits in his time on the mound.

The two teams were able to retake the field at 6:45 p.m. with Eric Whitecavage replacing Carr on the hill for the Bulldogs. Whitecavage's appearance was the 101st of his career, moving him into a tie for sixth in Big South history in the category.

The two teams would remain scoreless until Radford plated four in the top of the ninth to take a 4-2 advantage. Reliever Kole Harris looked to have secured the win for UNC Asheville, but with the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth, what would have been the third out on a Harris strikeout got by and Garrett Matheny scored from third to even things up at 2-2. JD Mundy then brought home two more on a single to give the Highlanders the two-run advantage.

UNC Asheville would not go down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth with Wilson singling and then Carmine Pagano doubling to give the Bulldogs two runners in scoring position. Troost's sacrifice fly brought home Wilson on a sacrifice fly that moved Pagano over to third. Pagano then scored on a wild pitch to even things up at 4-all and send the game into extra innings.

Both teams had chances in the first couple of extra innings, but Radford was able to score three runs in the top of the 12th to collect the win.

Blake Brown (3-4) suffered the loss on the hill for the Bulldogs. He pitched the final 3.1 innings and struck out five.

Radford reliever Derek Domecq (2-4) earned the win in dealing the final three innings for Radford.

The Highlanders narrowly out-hit the Bulldogs, 8-6, in the second game of the doubleheader. Freeberger led UNC Asheville with two hits. Mundy had four hits for the Highlanders.

What's Next?
The Bulldogs are scheduled to travel to Boone, N.C. for a matchup with mountain rival Appalachian State on Tuesday, April 14 at 5 p.m.
