Bulldogs Collect Dominating Road Win at Mountain Rival Appalachian State
05.14.2019 | Baseball
Appalachian State (21-28) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bulldogs took the lead by exploding for six runs in the top of the third.
The Bulldogs (15-33) batted around in the inning with Chris Troost getting things going by singling up the middle. Kole Harris then singled to left field before Greg Gasparro was walked to load the bases with no outs. A Dominic Freeberger single then brought home Troost to even the game at 1-1. Jake Madole was then walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run and give the Bulldogs their first advantage of the game at 2-1. Brandon Lankford and Danny Wilson were both then walked to bring home two more runs and put the Bulldogs ahead 4-1.
The Bulldogs then made it 6-1 with back-to-back sacrifice flies by PJ Heintz and Carmine Pagano.
Appalachian State would cut the Bulldog lead in half over the next couple of innings, but the Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the sixth to put UNC Asheville ahead, 9-3.
Pagano started things for the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth by doubling down the left field line. After Harris was walked shortly thereafter, Gasparro doubled down the right field line to bring in Pagano. Freeberger then singled in Harris. Gasparro scored as well to give the Bulldogs the six-run lead.
In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs scored four more runs to extend their lead to 13-3. Heintz singled up the middle to begin the inning and was brought home on a Troost single through the right side. Pagano, who had been walked earlier in the inning, was then brought home by a Gasparro single up the middle. Madole and Lankford singles brought home Troost and Gasparro to make it a 10-run Asheville advantage.
The Mountaineers would add four runs over the final few innings, but it would not be nearly enough with the Bulldogs claiming the six-run win.
Wilson (1-5) dealt the first five innings to secure his first win of the season on the mound. Wilson fanned four and he was one of four Bulldog pitchers used on the evening. Jacob Edwards closed things out by pitching a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
Five different Bulldogs captured multiple hits with Gasparro leading the way with three hits. He was 3-for-5 overall with three runs scored and two RBIs. He had two doubles in the Bulldog win. Freeberger, Madole, Heintz and Troost each had two hits with Madole collecting three RBIs.
In the game overall the Bulldogs out-hit the Mountaineers, 14-8. No Appalachian State player finished with multiple hits.
Will Sprinkle (2-8) suffered the loss on the hill for Appalachian State. He pitched the first two innings before being lifted. Sprinkle allowed five of the 13 runs in the game.
UNC Asheville will next travel to Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C. on May 16-18 for a three-game series versus Gardner-Webb to close out the regular season. First pitch for game one will be on Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m.
